If I had the chance to design a social structure for a society I would emphasize the importance of the family, the elemental unit that has been a part of most civilizations.

The love of a mother for her children is something seen not only among all cultures but also in most animals.

This bond is stronger than anything philosophers or social engineers may attempt to construct as a replacement.

A family transmits its traditions to the next generation in private, beyond the reach of the forces of social control that are increasing their power with the aid of technologies that give those in charge increased abilities to monitor and organize the activities of others.

The family is the healthiest unit for continual adaptation in the face of changing conditions that are a challenge for any culture. It places responsibility squarely where it belongs, with those most likely to be connected by love, the most powerful force for good.

A family structure also maximizes the potential of diversity within a population, increasing its ability to adapt and survive.

An ideal social structure should also include a belief in progress towards a better tomorrow for every child. Individual effort should be encouraged and rewarded, with a safety net provided to those who fall short. The best of those safety nets is the family.
